How It Works Setup Steps Sensors FAQ Specs Packages Warranty

Two Units.
Dead Simple.

BoxBinAlert uses a two-unit wireless system. The TX Sensor goes outside at the thing you want to monitor. The RX Receiver goes inside your home connected to WiFi. They communicate via long-range LoRa radio with no internet connection or cloud server required between them.

TX
The Sensor Unit (Outdoors)

The TX Sensor attaches to whatever you want to monitor. A mailbox, package bin, gate, cabinet, or any location where an event needs to be detected.

When triggered, it immediately fires a LoRa radio signal. That signal travels up to 2 miles through walls, fences, and trees to reach the RX Receiver inside your home.

Between triggers, the TX drops into deep sleep and draws only microamps of power. That is how it runs for months without a charge.

🔋3.7V rechargeable battery, 6 to 24 month life depending on use
🔌USB-C on-board charging.
☀️Solar input available. Pre-wired solar units available to order. Self-install possible but voids warranty.
😴Deep sleep between events. Microamp idle draw. Full power on trigger.
🌧️Weatherproof enclosure. Mounts outside year-round.
RX
The Receiver Unit (Indoors)

The RX Receiver lives inside your home, plugged into the wall via USB-C. During initial setup, you connect it to your home WiFi using a simple browser on your phone. Takes about 2 minutes.

Once configured, you never touch it again. When the RX receives a TX signal, it fires an email alert to your address in under 10 seconds.

Always on. Because it runs on wall power, with the battery backup, always charged, the RX receiver never sleeps and never misses a signal. Every event gets captured, every time.

🔌USB-C wall powered. Always on, zero missed events.
📡Receives LoRa signals from up to 8 TX Sensors simultaneously.
📧Sends email alert in under 10 seconds.

5 Minutes.

No tools, no wiring, no electrician. This is the complete installation process.

1
Install the RX Receiver

Start here, before touching the TX. Mount the RX Receiver on an interior wall near a window, about 4 to 5 feet off the floor. Plug it into wall power via the included USB-C cable. The RX needs to be powered and on your network before any TX sensor will work.

2
Connect to WiFi

With the RX lid removed, locate the button on the Right side of the USB plug, this is the USER button. Press/hold for 5 Seconds to enter Wifi/Admin mode. When the LED light is Solid/On, Locate the RX WiFi on your phone, open WiFi settings and connect to the BoxBinAlert RX WiFi. A browser page appears automatically, or go to (http://192.168.4.1). Select your home WiFi name, password, and then add your email address. Takes about 2 minutes. The RX is now live on your network.

3
Mount the TX Sensor

For the Photo/Mailbox sensor: Before you mount the TX unit under the mailbox or on the post, connect to battery power and trigger sensor. LED will blink on TX, then on RX. Now mount the TX unit. The photo sensor wire routes through a small hole drilled in the bottom of the mailbox. Insert the included plastic grommet in the hole first, run the sensor cable through, attach the sensor to the side 3" from the bottom, pointing up to the top of the lid. For water, temperature, soil, or CO2 sensors, simply place or stake the TX at the monitoring location.

4
Test Before Closing Up

Before finalizing any mounting, trigger the sensor manually. Open the mailbox lid, tip the tilt sensor, or activate whatever you installed. You should receive a test email within 10 seconds. Confirm it works before drilling any additional holes or securing anything permanently.

5
Add More Sensors (Optional)

Each RX Receiver supports up to 8 TX Sensors. Pair additional TX sensors at anytime by holding the USER button on the RX for 10 seconds to enter pair mode. Now onthe TX unit, trigger the sensor, LED Flash, Auto-pair-Done. Photo, tilt, water, temperature, soil, and CO2 sensors all pair to the same receiver. Each one sends its own named alert so you always know which location triggered.

6
Never Think About It Again

The system runs itself. Alerts arrive automatically. Every alert includes the current battery level so you always know the charge state before it becomes an issue. When a TX needs a charge, plug in via USB-C. No apps to update, no accounts to manage.

Sensor Types

The TX platform supports multiple sensor types and one RX Receiver works with all of them. Start with one and expand as your needs grow.

SENSOR MAIL! DARK=CLOSED / LIGHT=OPEN
Photo / Mailbox
How it works
A light-sensitive photodetector sits inside the mailbox. When the lid opens, daylight floods the previously dark interior and the sensor registers a sudden spike in light level. That spike triggers the TX to fire instantly. No moving parts, no mechanical wear. The sensor resets itself when the lid closes and darkness returns.

This is the primary sensor for standard mailboxes and enclosed package compartments. It does not rely on physical contact with the lid, making it more reliable long-term. Works day and night using light-versus-dark contrast inside the box.

TILT wire to TX ~90° TRIGGERED!
Tilt / Analog
How it works
A tilt sensor attached to the lid measures angle change when the lid moves. At rest the lid sits horizontal. The moment someone opens the lid upward, the angle shifts past a set threshold and the TX fires. Reverse polarity mode flips the logic for package boxes where the lid starts vertical and swings open differently.

Works on standard mailboxes, package delivery bins, gates, cabinet doors, and any hinged lid. A small wire runs through a hole drilled in the mailbox bottom to connect the sensor to the TX unit mounted outside below.

FLOOR / GROUND PROBE 💧 💧 WATER DETECTED
Water / Flood
How it works
Two probe contacts sit close together on the sensor tip. Water conducts electricity, so the moment liquid touches both probes it closes a circuit and the TX fires an alert. The sensor responds in seconds to even a small amount of water, well before any real flooding can occur. It resets automatically once the probes dry out.

Place it near sump pumps, under sinks, in basements, by water heaters, or along irrigation lines. Because the TX is battery and solar capable, this sensor works anywhere water might appear with no wiring required.

✓ Available Now
HIGH LOW TEMP ALERT!
Temperature
How it works
A digital temperature probe reads the ambient temperature at set intervals. You define a high threshold, a low threshold, or both. If the reading crosses either boundary, the TX fires an alert immediately. The TX returns to deep sleep between readings to preserve battery life. Alert frequency and check interval are both configurable.

Monitor greenhouses, server rooms, wine cellars, pipes at risk of freezing, outdoor storage, or any environment that needs to stay within a safe range. You set the exact temperature that matters for your situation.

✓ Available Now
SOIL MOISTURE SOIL DRY ALERT
Soil / Moisture
How it works
A resistive soil probe measures how well the soil conducts electricity, which changes based on moisture content. Wet soil conducts more, dry soil conducts less. You set a dry threshold, a wet threshold, or both. When the reading crosses that level, the TX fires an alert. The TX sleeps between readings and only wakes to transmit when a threshold is crossed.

Perfect for garden beds, greenhouse trays, potted plants, and crop rows. Pair with a solar panel and stake it in the ground for a fully self-powered, zero-maintenance plant monitor.

CO2 / NDIR ~400 ppm OK HIGH CO2! PPM LEVEL CO2 ALERT!
CO2 / Air Quality
How it works
A NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) CO2 sensor measures carbon dioxide concentration in parts per million (ppm). Normal outdoor air runs around 400 ppm. Indoor spaces can rise quickly if ventilation is poor. You set a ppm threshold and the TX fires an alert when CO2 levels rise above it, giving you time to ventilate before conditions become unsafe.

Built for garages, workshops, grow rooms, greenhouses, and any enclosed space where air quality matters. CO2 buildup can happen faster than you realize and this sensor gives you an early warning before levels become a health concern.

FAQ

Setup & Getting Started
Connect the RX Receiver to your home WiFi using a phone browser (takes 2 minutes), enter your email address, then mount the TX Sensor on your mailbox or package bin. Alerts start immediately. No app, no account, no subscription required.
No. Once your WiFi and email are configured, the system runs itself indefinitely. Alerts arrive automatically. The only reason to visit the website would be to upgrade your plan for dashboard or SMS features, which is entirely optional.
Always set up the RX Receiver and connect it to WiFi first. Once the RX is live and you have confirmed a test alert works, then install the TX. For Photo/Mailbox and Tilt/Analog sensors: drill a small hole in the bottom of the mailbox, insert a small plastic wire protector grommet, and route the sensor cable through. Peel back the 3M adhesive cover from the sensor pad to secure the sensor to the inside wall of the mailbox Left or Right Side. 3" from the bottom. Mount the TX unit on the post or underside of the box. Test the sensor by opening the lid before securing anything permanently. For water, temperature, soil, and CO2 sensors, place or stake the TX at the monitoring location and test before finalizing.
Mount the RX Receiver on an interior wall near a window, at eye level (4 to 5 feet high). Even through walls and floors, LoRa signals carry up to 2 miles, so precise placement is not critical. Any interior location works. Closer to an exterior wall or window will maximize range.
Hardware & Specs
TX Sensors use a rechargeable 3.7V lithium battery. A typical residential mailbox checked once daily can last 12 to 24 months per charge. High-frequency applications like commercial mail or busy delivery points may see 6 to 12 months. Every alert automatically includes the current battery level, so you always know the charge state before it becomes a problem. Both units charge via USB-C.
Yes and no. Solar capability requires a pre-wired TX unit that comes configured from the factory with the solar charge input connected. You can order this as a special configuration. Alternatively, technically inclined users can add solar themselves by connecting a 5V solar panel ground and charge line to the designated solar charge pin on the board. The hookup is straightforward (GND to GND, solar to the charge pin), but self-installed solar modifications void the warranty. If you want solar without voiding the warranty, order the pre-wired solar unit. Contact us before ordering and we will set you up with the right configuration.
Between trigger events, the TX Sensor drops into deep sleep mode and draws only microamps of current, which is roughly 1,000 times less power than when it is active. It wakes up instantly the moment a trigger occurs, fires the LoRa transmission, and drops back to sleep. This is how a small battery powers the unit for months or years rather than days.
BoxBinAlert uses 915MHz LoRa (Long Range) radio, the same type used in agricultural and industrial IoT deployments. In open rural environments, range reaches up to 2 miles. In suburban environments with walls, fences, and trees, expect 0.25 to 1 mile of reliable coverage. LoRa penetrates obstacles that WiFi and Bluetooth cannot.
Yes. Each RX Receiver supports up to 8 TX Sensors simultaneously. Perfect for monitoring multiple mailboxes, a mailbox and a package bin, multiple entry points, or any combination of sensor types. Each sensor sends its own distinct alert so you always know which location triggered.
Standard tilt sensors trigger when an angle changes from horizontal to tilted, like a mailbox lid opening downward. Reverse polarity flips the logic so the sensor triggers when the lid moves from a vertical resting position. This is used for package bins and delivery boxes where the lid opens upright rather than falling open.
Alerts & Notifications
Correct. Email alerts are free forever on every BoxBinAlert unit. You pay once for the hardware and that is it. There are optional paid plans for SMS alerts, multi-device dashboards, and analytics, but those are never required. The core alert system works completely free, indefinitely.
The full alert chain (TX triggers, LoRa signal fires, RX receives, WiFi sends email to your phone) completes in under 10 seconds in most conditions. SMS alerts available on paid plans are typically even faster, arriving as a direct text message within seconds.
No. The TX Sensor has a configurable cooldown timer. Once triggered, it will not fire another alert until the cooldown period expires. You set this in the setup. A 30-minute cooldown, for example, means one alert per 30 minutes regardless of how many times the lid opens.
Multiple email recipients are available on paid plans via the dashboard. On the free plan, one email address receives all alerts. You can also set up email forwarding rules on your own mail client to share alerts with family members or colleagues.
Short answer: yes — but not on your own. When your RX Receiver sends its first alert, your email address is automatically registered in our system and becomes the anchor for your entire account — all your TX sensors, alert history, and settings tie to it. If you change your email through the RX Receiver, our system would treat it as a brand new account and your existing devices and history wouldn't follow it. The good news: we can change it on our end in about 2 minutes without touching your devices or losing anything. Just contact support with your current email and the new one you want and we'll handle it.
Expanding Your System
Absolutely. Each RX Receiver pairs with up to 8 TX Sensors, and you can add more RX Receivers to cover a larger property. Units purchased later pair to your existing setup without any cloud reconfiguration. Here are some ways customers expand their systems:

🏠 Home Coverage — Start with one TX on your mailbox. Add a second TX on your front door package bin. A third on your gate or side entrance. One RX covers all of them and sends named alerts so you know exactly which location triggered.

📦 Package & Delivery Zones — Install a TX on your porch package locker, another on the garage side door where deliveries get left, and a third on a back yard gate. Know the moment anything moves anywhere on your property.

🌊 Flood & Environment — Add a Water/Flood TX in your basement, crawlspace, or near your water heater. Add a Temperature TX in a detached garage, greenhouse, or wine storage room. Each sensor sends its own alert, and your RX handles all of them.

🏡 Large Properties & Ranches — For properties beyond a single RX range, add a second RX Receiver in the barn, shop, or outbuilding. Each RX operates independently on your WiFi network, and all alerts route to the same email address.

🏢 Small Business & Commercial — Monitor a back door, supply room, and customer entrance all from one receiver. Up to 8 TX sensors per RX keeps even complex small business setups simple and subscription-free.
Yes, but you do not have to. The system works perfectly without ever logging into a dashboard. For Starter plan and above, an online dashboard lets you check battery levels, signal strength, event history, rename devices, and view analytics. The free plan gets email alerts without any dashboard access required.
